2014 New Zealand Annual Wine Tasting – Toronto

New Zealand

Tucked away in a remote corner of the globe, New Zealand is a country of glorious unspoiled landscapes, exotic flora and fauna, and a culture that is renowned for its spirit of youthful imagination.

The two main islands of the country located between 36 – 46 latitude south produce less than one per cent of the world’s total, but

exports to many Pacific Rim countries, the United Kingdom, the U.S.A. and Canada.

The nine wine producing regions mainly grow sauvignon blanc, viognier, chardonnay, pinot gris, pinot noir, cabernet sauvignon, syrah, and some experimental varieties.

Although sauvignon blanc is the dominant grape variety, pinot noir from Central Otago, Marlborough, and Nelson all on the south island is gaining many aficionados.

New Zealand pinot noir differs from that of Burgundy, but those from Nelson come very close.

This year, a fair number of wineries poured their products to an eager Toronto audience.
