Bouchard Pere et Fils is one of the better known Burgundy shippers and owns 130 hectares of vineyards in the appellation.
In 1731 Michel Bouchard, a cloth merchant from Dauphine in France, founded the company, which is now one of the oldest and most reputable in Burgundy.
In 1775, Joseph Bouchard acquired his first vineyard “Les Cailleret” in Volnay, and ever since has been expanding his holdings.
One vineyard Beaune Greves Premier Cru L’Enfant Jesus (3.92 hectares) is fully owned by Bouchard Pere et Fils and marketed as a monopole brand.
The wines are made and matured in the winery’s St Vincent cellars, in Savigny-les-Beaune.
Bouchard winemakers are instructed to seek purity of fruit, balance, elegance, and refinement given vintage quality.
The growing season in Burgundy varies a great deal from one year to the next. In general, a maximum of four vintages in a decade yield exceptional wines.
This may change with climate changes in teh future.
Luc Bouchard, the export manager, visits Toronto every year for a portfolio tasting as not every brand is listed by the L.C.B.O.
Those offered during the tasting can be ordered privately, and the Ontario agent (Woodman Wines and Spirits) facilitates the process.
Bouchard Pere et Fils, William Fevre (Chablis), and Villa Ponciago (Beaujolais) are now owned by Henriot, a Champagne house.
The 2013 vintage in Burgundy was weak at best, and very small.
The small size of the crop forced wineries to increase their prices, although quality lacks especially for reds.
Chablis vintage fared better, and Beaujolais was fine.
