Colio Estate Winery – One Of the Best in Southwestern Ontario.

The Lake Erie North Shore wine story began millions of years ago when the area was blessed with an abundant deposit of rich glacial soil from the last Ice Age.

Today, that fertile loam nourishes the fruits of local vineyards.

Geographically, this area is located as far south as northern California and Tuscany (Italy), and even further south than the famed Bordeaux chateaux and the Burgundy wine region (France).

This southernmost shore of Canada features sun-bathed vineyards, ideal growing conditions and vineyard owners who grow their fruit lovingly.

Deep dark reds, crisp whites and delicate icewines are produced in 14 wineries in Windsor, Essex, and Pelee Island (the southernmost landmass in the country).

Colio Estates and Winery was founded in 1980’s and has expanded ever since. The winery’s first winemaker Carlo Negri, originally from Friuli (Italy) contributed a lot to the fame of the winery until his retirement in 2003. Now, Lawrence Buhler and a team of young, well-educated, talented assistant winemakers carry out the winemaking responsibilities.

Colio produces three lines of wines _ CEV (Colio Estates Vineyards, Girl’s Night Out, and Lake And River Vineyard Select).

CEV line wines are all estate grown and always of outstanding quality.

Girl’s Night Out line the first “life style_ wine created by the talented marketing team to take advantage of the growing young female segment of the population. It has been a success from its inception and production has now grown to a red, sparkling, and rosé version.

The Lake And River Vineyard Select series have a youthful vibrancy and zest with solid fruit core that makes them easily approachable with or without food.

CEV Sauvignon Blanc, 2011 – aromatically, this sauvignon blanc offers grapefruit, gooseberry and freshly moved grass scents. On the palate, melon and tropical fruit flavours emerge, underlined with refined herbal aromas.

The finish is long and pleasant. Pair confidently with pan-fried fillet of sole, halibut with capers an brown butter, pastas with cream sauces.

CEV Small Lot Syrah, 2010 – light garnet in colour and brilliant. The bouquet offers blackberry, chocolate and black pepper aromas. Full-bodied, smooth and intense with a long, satisfying aftertaste.

Best to enjoy with medium rare roast beef, roast leg of lamb, roast loin of pork, game stews, and aged cheeses.

The Lake And River Vineyard Select Rock Red 2010 offers berry aromas underlined with plum and white pepper. Te blend consists of cabernet franc, cabernet sauvignon and syrah. In the mouth blackberry flavour dominates. The acid backbone and supple tannins make it lively and appropriate with pastas featuring tomato sauces, roast pork loin, pizza and grilled burgers.

Moonlight White, 2011, is a chardonnay and riesling blend with straw yellow colour. Aromas of squash, granny smith apples and a smooth texture contribute to its appeal. The wine has a round finish

Girl’s Night Out Chardonnay, 2011, is a 100 per cent chardonnay varietal with apple and tropical fruit aromas. Medium weight with racy acidity makes it a perfect accompaniment for breaded sole fillet, grilled chicken, cream-sauced pastas and pizza.

Girl’s Night Out Riesling, 2011, is 100 per cent riesling and offers citrus aromas. In the mouth citrus, melon and mineral flavours dominate. This wine has a racy acidity, and fie after aftertaste.

Suitable as an aperitif, for fruit bowls, sautéed shrimps, sautéed scallops, pan-fried perch fillets and seafood pastas.
