Descorchados 2017

Descorchados, edited by Patricia Tapia, is a publication dedicated to present the wineries and wines of Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Uruguay.

The writers taste wines submitted by wineries and score all. Selecting those they deem superior in quality and value out of 100.

In 2017 Descorchados scored wines’.  Winery managements of high scoring wines were asked to present their products in a number of North American cities.

In June 2017 50 wineries poured an estimated 150 wines in Toronto, of which I tasted 59, mainly focusing on red wines.

Argentine wineries emphasised their red wines (mostly malbec), with a few other varieties and blends. Argentine has approximately 2000 wineries, most of which concentrate their efforts on malbec, although a few are now starting to produce chardonnay, torrontes, and cabernet sauvignon, and chardonnay.

Chile’s 300 wineries were well represented pouring several sauvignon blancs, a few chardonnays, and many red wines.

Brazil was represented by two wineries, pouring sparkling wines.

Uruguay, a small country with a long tradition of viticulture was represented one winery, Bodegas Garzon with two white wines and one red.

Tannat, originally from France and a tannic grape variety, is the standard  planted everywhere. Garzon’s tannat tasted relatively soft.

For the Descorcahdos 2017 edition, judges tasted 3800 wines before deciding which to include in their publication.

Below, please find my recommendations that I scored 88+and above.
