German Wine Festival 2016 – Toronto

German Wine Festival

German Wine Festival

German vineyards cover 100000 hectares (One per cent of world’s total)
The most outstanding grape variety of Germany is the Rhineriesling that offers extraordinary flavours and reflects the terroir best of all grape varieties.

Every year, German winery principals visit Toronto, to pour their wines to an eager trade and public and this year was no exception.

The catering company served a variety of hors d’oeuvre and house-smoked tuna on flatbread with pickled cucumber slices, and an assortment of cheeses and breads.

German wineries produce now dry wines (by definition a dry wine may contain up to nine grams of residual sugar). True great German wines from the Mosel River are low alcohol (7 – 9 per cent ABV), very aromatic, delicate, elegant, refined and fruity and really inexpensive as the vineyards are on steep slopes and must be maintained and harvested manually.

Rheingau produces some outstanding Rieslings (dry and sweet) along with pinot noirs (aka spatburgunder). Germany ranks after France, the USA as the third largest pinot producer.
Some German pinot noirs have a very appealing taste, and cost relatively little.
This year collectively 131 wines were available for tasting. I tasted 53 of them.
