Where God and Grapes Meet
If you stop to think about it, religion and wine often intersect in religious practices performed by various creeds and cultures. Roman Catholics have their own sacraments, which have evolved over the last 2,000 years, but which definitely involve taking a small sip as a representation of the blood of Christ. Other religions have their own customs and practices. But many scientists in the modern era, especially those that come from countries that are major wine producers, are intent on convincing us that a little wine is actually good for us on a daily basis.

Ever since Europe crawled out of the depths of the Dark Ages, the one institution that really held everything together to a large extent was the Catholic Church and all of its abbeys spread out across Europe. There were able to produce some of the finest wool in all of Europe and also just happened to have some of the best vineyards across the continent, especially in France, where the soil and climate were perfect to make the enterprise successful. Being both pious and with an eye towards a profit, the Benedictine monks sold most of their wine production. They kept just enough for themselves, to quench their thirst, so to speak, after a hard day of working in the fields and doing all that planning and organizing. Arguably, it is thanks to the Benedictines themselves that France today has such an outstanding wine industry.

From Local Wine Merchants to World Renown
A family business can take unexpected twists and turns across generations. Take the world-famous Champagne label Taittinger. It basically all started with a gentleman named Jacques Fourneaux establishing a wine business at the beginning of the 18th century in the heart of the Champagne region.
