In 1984, Herbert Konzelmann arrived in Niagara-on-the-Lake from Stuttgart, determines to establish a winery in Niagara.
He is a fourth generation winemaker, and decide to look for a suitable lactation on the shores Lake Ontario knowing about its relatively “mild” winter temperatures due to the “lake effect”.
In his region, summers are prolonged, and often extend into autumn, allowing grapes to mature fully. This results in more elegant, balanced, and fruity wines. After taking soil samples from several suitable available plots and sending them to Germany for analysis, he bought the land where the winery now stands. Herbert Konzelmann expertly produces wines that reflect the “terroir”, as most wines are made from estate grown fruit.
The winery is heralded as “Niagara’s Exclusive Lakeshore Winery” reflecting the quality of its wines.
In the summer, facilities are made available for picnics, and while there. You can taste more than 30 VQA (Vintners Quality Alliance) produced by Konzelmann.
His 2008 Vidal icewine was selected as one of the best by the Wine Spectator magazine, and ranked with their 100 Best wines of the vintage.
Grapes are hand picked, sorted three times and then processed with great care.
