Living Healthily: How to Eat and Drink Your Way to a Whole New You.

drinkAs we get older (and hopefully, wiser as well), we reach a point wherein we try to watch what we eat. God knows we’ve certainly gained a few stone since we were in our 20’s – for some, it could be as little as 2 to 3 kilos (good for you!), whilst for others, it could be as high as 10 kilos or more.

Everybody knows that the key is moderation. You can still eat what you want and indulge in a snack once in a while, but if you eat sensibly, then there is less of a chance for you to gain weight. Some individuals use the ‘once a week bingeing’ rule: you carefully watch what you eat 6 days a week, but one day is reserved for eating whatever you like, be it that bar of chocolate, that bag of crisps, or that pizza slice.  Others give themselves a time limit of a month or two before they indulge. And there are many more hundreds of different diets out there, ranging from the GI diet to the ‘caveman’ diet, each with their own pluses and negatives.

Look for healthier alternatives

However, not all of us have the discipline to stay away from unhealthy snacks and beverages. It is admittedly quite hard to eat right, especially when we are faced with sugar-laden and fat-laden foods left and right. In this case, the trick is to be more mindful of what we consume – you don’t have to reach for that oily potato chip when you can have a healthier alternative such as a baked sweet potato or a kale or spinach crisp, and you don’t have to quench your thirst with that huge glass of soda when you can opt for a healthier soy milk drink. This brings us to our topic for today: the benefits of soy.

Can drinks like soy milk help you lose weight?

A cold glass of soy milk on a hot day can be incredibly refreshing, especially when you consider the potential benefits. Soy drinks do vary from brand to brand, so always read the label, but if we use a glass of Unsweetened Vivesoy as an example:

  • A 200ml cup contains less than 80 calories
  • A 200ml cup of soy milk contains 30% of your RDA (recommended daily amount) of calcium
  • Soy is relatively high in protein and essential amino acids
  • Vivesoy drinks are cholesterol-free

In addition to this, soy milk helps make you feel full longer due to its quite high fibre content. Instead of making do with a sugary soda, you can have a glass of soy milk in the morning, which can leave you feeling fuller and more energised – ready to take on the day’s challenges with renewed vigour.

Of course, there are other things you can do to facilitate your weight loss. Eat breakfast. It has been shown that breakfast is one of the most important meals of the day – and if you skip it, your body will not have what it needs to get a much-needed early boost. Walk whenever you can, and try to portion out your food. The point is to be more conscious of what you consume. So before reaching for that can of soda, think of alternatives – and lose weight sensibly.
