A memorable comparative chardonnay tasting

Chardonnay is the most widely planted white wine grape variety from Burgundy (its birthplace) British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley, and from California to Greece and everywhere in between.

It may be un-oaked as is the case in Chablis or Ontario, or California, or aged in oak barrels fro a few months or longer.

Most consider Burgundy to produce the finest chardonnays but only in successful vintages. Unfortunately, climatic conditions in Burgundy change from year to year, whereas in British Columbia, or California weather changes occur less perceptibly.

Mission Hill winery’s owner Anthony von Mandl loves art and wine and wants to produce the best chardonnay possible in British Columbia, and decided to create an artisanal winery specializing in chardonnay and merlot.

The CheckMate Winery uses exclusively fruit grown on five specially selected vineyards in the Okanagan Valley on elevations ranging fro 1040 – 1309 feet above sea level (312 – 392 metres). Yields on these vineyards are low (2 1é2tons per acre (approximately 7 tons per hetcare0.

All checkmate wines are wild ferment and aged between 14 to 16 months in French oak barrels.

Recently, the winemaker staged a comparative blind tasting of CheckMate chardonnays, along with two famous Burgundian, one outstanding Argentine, and one outstanding Californian chardonnay.

I was suitably impressed with the quality of all the wines.

Here are my scores in this blind tasting.
