Professor B’s April 12 Vintages Release Recommendations


This release contains a mini thematic of Valpolicella wines, and products from many countries.

Surprisingly there are only two rose wines offered.

My recommendations are:


Pig Peat Islay Blended Malt, Douglas Laing and Co. Ltd. Scotland
This unchillfiltered Scotch smells of salt and peat.
It is “pale” indicating absence of caramelized sugar in the blend.
A smooth and seamless whisky to sip with a little water to unlock its intrinsic aromas.

Millesimata Moscato d’ Asti Grappa, 2010, Castanger, Italy
Generally, grappa is never vintage dated. This small distillery feels that using moscat grapes make a difference to this tradition.
This grappa smells of tropical fruits fragrant white flowers.
An elegant grappa you can enjoy after an extended meal, or “chase” it with a fine Colombian supreme coffee.

Fortified wine

Walnut Brown Oloroso, William and Humbert, Jerez de la Frontera, Spain
Well balanced between sweetness, spiciness and buttery notes.
Clean and pleasant finish

White wines

Chardonnay, 2012, Lailey, Niagara Peninsula, Ontario, Canada
Buttery, and peach-blossom smells are followed with apple and vanilla. Fine acidity. Well-balanced and elegant to pair with poached halibut, or pan-fried salmon with cream sauce.

Sauvignon Blanc, 2012, Momo, Marlborough, New Zealand
Herbal and refreshing aromas. Mouth watering acidity and vibrant flavours.
Herbal chicken breast, roasted apple or apricot-stuffed pork loin would be fine accompaniments.

Cotes Du Rhone, 2012, Perrin et Fils, Cotes Du Rhone, France
Very polished blend of roussanne, viognier, marsanne, and grenache blanc (all staples of white Rhone Valley whites.
Fruity and very appealing mouth feel.
Ready to enjoy on its own, with hors d’eouvre, crudités, fish pates, seafood soups.
