Professor B's Monthly Vintages Release Recommendations (March).

The Vintages division of the LCBO has been very successful in planning purchases, analysing changing market conditions, employing dedicated employees, and buying relatively small lots so as not get stuck with any brand.

Sales gave been growing constantly due to astute planning of distribution throughout the system.

The only problem, if one can define it as such, is that a brand may not be imported again for at least one year, even if popular.

Another subset of listings involves the Vintages Essentials. This section of Vintages carries a limited selection, but all brands are available throughout the year.

The following are my recommendations from the March 3 release of approximately 110 wines:

Spirit:

The Irishman Single Malt

Citrus fruit aromas waft out of the glass. The whiskey is smooth with a creamy mouth feel. Well balanced with a warm and satisfying finish.

Sparkling wine

Premier Cru Brut Rose, Charles Mignon, Champagne, France

Excellent and appealing pale pink colour with strawberry and apple aromas. It is dry, medium-bodied, and elegant, with a fine finish.

Enjoy on its own with like-minded friends, or with pan-fried or sautéed pork.

White wines:

Gewurztramier, 2007, Hengst Turckheim, Alsace, France

Gewürztraminer is grown around the world but the best and most expressive originate in Alsace. This wine smells of peach, pear, citrus, spice, rose petals and lychee.

Dry and delicious on the palate, with flavours that confirm what the nose detected in the first sniff.

Sancerre. 2010, Pascal Jolivet, Loire Valley, France

This winery is considered one of the best in Sancerre. The wine displays a mouth-watering style with lots of flint and framing lime, and chives. Excellent, dry, balanced. Enjoyable with light white fleshed fish simply prepared.

Red wines:

Ridge Three Valleys, 2009, Sonoma County, California

A blend of zinfandel (70 per cent), carignan (15), petite syrah (10), grenache (3), and mataro (2) is masterful. The long-time winemaker of the winery is a successful master blender and this wine is no exception.

Full-bodied, well-structured and fruity. The acidity lifts the wine to heavenly heights. Smooth tannins and elegant integration of oak makes this wine outstanding with or without food.

Purple Angel, 2009, Montes, Colchagua Valley, Chile

Montes is one of the premiere wineries of Chile. The winemaker succeeded in creating a carmenere (with a little help from petit verdot) with deep-purple ruby colour, displaying blueberry, cherry, smoke meat, mint, and ploughed earth aromas.

The wine is dry, impeccably balanced with lively acidity. The finish is long and satisfying. Enjoyable now with rich foods. Can be cellared fro up to six years for smoothers texture.

Volnay, 2009, Domaine Poulleau Pere et Fils, Burgundy, France

Volnay in Burgundy is reputed for its excellent “succulent”, and soft wines that are unforgettable in good vintages.

This Volnay smells of violets and cherries. Medium-bodied, fruit-driven, dry and elegant. Excellent with a long aftertaste.

Vaqueyras Les Christins, 2009, Perrin et Fils, Cotes du Rhone, France

Vacqueyras is famous for its full-bodied; full bore red wines that go best with grilled strip loin steaks, or rib eye steaks.

This blend of grenache (80 per cent) and syrah (20) smells of garrigue, pepper, liquorice, and lavender. It is rich, well extracted and ready to enjoy with hard cheeses, rich game stews, roast rib of beef. It should be cellared for five to six years if you want to enjoy it on its own. This wine represents excellent value.

Vigneto Montesodi Chianti Ruffina Riserva, 2007, Marchesi de Frescobaldi, Tuscany, Italy

Marchesi de Frescobaldi is a well-established old, traditional winery in Tuscany, with large holdings. This single vineyard Chianti exudes cherry and dark chocolate aromas. It is smooth and balanced, with layered flavours and a long satisfying aftertaste.
