Senhora Do Convento – An Old Monastery and Winery – Portugal

Senhora Do Convento
Senhora Do Convento

The good Cistercian monks at the Senhora do Conveto have been producing fine port wines for the past nine centuries for sustenance and to maintain the monastery financially. The impressive 12th century monastery still stands on a 150-hectare property overlooking 27 hectares of vineyards.

Today the monks are long gone but their legacy of crafting fine port and table wines continues.

The Senhora do Convento is located in the beautiful, and serene Douro Valley approximately two-and-a-half hours east from the city of Oporto. The property, now owned by a Canadian mining company, and managed by Donald Ziraldo, also grows tree fruits, (cherries, quince, apples, pears), and maintains a fine olive tree grove.

Donald Ziraldo, who along with Karl Kaiser founded Inniskillin winery located in the Niagara Peninsula, Ontario, for more the three decades. Ziraldo is a natural marketer of fine wines and has connections all over the world, and now with his wife Victoria, will increase Senhora do Convento wines to their deserved fame everywhere.

The olive oil of the Senhora do Convento that wine writers present tasted during the presentation was delicious, fruity, light, and deeply flavoured. It will be available soon in Toronto soon, and if you see it in an upscale grocery store, buy it confidently and use it for dressings only. It is to good to use it for frying.
