The winemaker of this relatively Rioja winery (100 000 bottles) loves to experiment.
The management decided to age the same wine in identically proportioned barrels of the came capacity of French-, Russian-, and American oak.
Participant of the small group of tasters did not know any of the specifics of the “3” wines presented.
In the end, by consensus, the wine aged in Russian oak barrel proved to be best tasting of the three.
Russian oak from Krasnojarsk, located southeast of Moscow, is tight grained. The wood is cut differently to that of French, but the staves were shipped to French barrel makers for “seasoning”, and making the final product.
The group then proceeded tasting other wines produced by Valenciso.
Blanco, 2012, (a blend of 70 per cent viura and 30 garnacha blanca) smelled fruity and floral at the same time. Well balanced and medium bodied with a clean finish.
Reserva, 2007 offers berry aromas, is medium-bodied, with a refreshing acidity and lively mouth feel.
Rose, 2013 made entirely using tempranillo grapes. Smells of cherries, is easy to enjoy and appreciate its youthful aromas.
The vintage 2000 had an intense taste with a satisfying after taste.
2004 offered freshness, a lot of fruit and fine balance.
2006 smells of ripe Morello cherries, and spices. It is full bodied with intense flavours and complexity.
2008 is full bodied, smells of cherries, is well balanced and generous with a long aftertaste.
