Wine Tasting October 15
This 120 plus release is themed California and Piedmont.
As can be expected, California wines represent a vast choice of red wines and a few chardonnays worth exploring.
Surprisingly, there are no California sparkling wines, nor a big choice of pinot noirs.
I am surprised that there are no dessert wines from California in this release
A few red wines taste over-the-top fruity, and overpriced.
Ridge Zinfandel and Napanook exceeded my expectations, albeit both seem to be on the expensive end.
As for Piedmont, I am afraid the selection is under whelming. A few Barolos and Barbarescos taste of “nebbiolo”, a notoriously difficult grape to grow and vinify.
Surprisingly, there are no white wines ( i.e arneis, moscato d’Asti naturale, not even a ien spumante from the town of Asti).
For cognac aficionados, Hine would be a good choice, even if you don’t smoke cigars.

Dark brilliant yellow. Apple, peach, plum aromas dominate the nose of this intensely flavoured chardonnay from the southernmost region of South Africa.
A delightful wine to pair with shrimp mignonette, pan-fried sole filets Duglere, breaded sole fillets, poached halibut and beurre noisette.

Geyserville Zinfandel, 2014, Ridge, Alexander Valley, Sonoma County, California
Dark brilliant red. Made using 100 plus year old zinfandel grapes along with carignane, petite syrah, alicante Bouchet, and mourvedre. This high alcohol (14.6 per cent ABV) is well extracted, balanced, and layered in a range of flavours. Pair with medium rare steaks, roast rib of beef, game stews, hard cheeses, country terrines.

This is the second label oft eh legendary Chateau Rauzan Segla. Attractive aromas of raspberries and black currants greet the nose. The silky smooth outh feel and harmony are remarkable. A very fine effort. Long finish.
Enjoy with grilled lamb chops, roast leg of lamb, and medium hard cheeses.
