Wine Tasting September 17 Vintages Release Recommendations

Wine tasting
Wine tasting

Ontario is the feature of this release.

There are two cranberry wines, one sweet Quebec cider, one sparkling Ontario wine, two icewines, though only one was offered for tasting, two British Columbia whites, and eight Ontario whites.
For red wines planners decided to feature two British Columbia, and 10 Ontario wines. Several were unavailable to taste.

The rest of the release contains a panoply of wines from several countries including the U S A ( mainly California), France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Argentina, Chile, and Bulgaria.
Ontario white wines cover a range from chardonnay, riesling pinot gris and a blend. All are fine in their own right, but not outstanding. Certainly, there are wineries that produce pinot blanc, sauvignon blanc, and several other varietal, but none is offered.

Fro reds, the selection is mediocre at best, with the exception of one Gran Q by Foreign Affair.
At first, I was impressed with the depth, extract and power (16.9 per cent ABV). After 45 minutes, I tasted the wine again, but discovered a little volatile acidity, which distracts just a bit from this otherwise well made wine.

The grapes were dried for three months after harvest, then pressed, fermented and aged in French, Hungarian, and American oak barrels for 25 months. No price was provided, but certainly it is well over $ 80.00 may be even $ 100.00. It is a welcome effort and could be an interesting “ringer” in a wine tasting among connoisseurs.

Here are my recommendations.

The Sack Shiraz, 2015, Magpie Estate, Barossa Valley, South Australia
Barossa Valley is famous for its shiraz quality. The fruit for this wine originates from Ebenezer and Greenoch regions within the valley. Look for ripe red and black fruit berry aromas, underlined by smoke and spicy notes. The smoke comes from charred American oak barrels. Excellent structure and aftertaste.
Enjoy with game stews, roast beef, blackened beef, and strong cheeses.
